I am writing this on the 62^nd day of 2012. By now you have begun to form the habits that could determine the results you will achieve this year. What goals or intentions do you have for the new year? Were they set based on what is possible or were you influenced primarily on your previous limitations?

Remember the conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat in Alice In Wonderland? ”Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat. “I don’t much care where–” said Alice. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat. “–so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation. “Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.” (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Chapter 6). Do you ever wonder about the basis for some of your decisions about the future?

Many executives and professionals have joined me on the journey to make 2012 their best year ever. The journey begins by completing the Personal Effectiveness Advanced Insights Profile. In the telephone debrief and strategy session following the completion of the profile, I ask, “What is your vision for 2012?” or “What is the one thing you want to accomplish by December 31, 2012?”

When there is hesitation, the profile frequently reveals lack of clarity in the way they see the outer and inner worlds (the external and internal dimensions of our life). Within each, there is a Personal, Task and Systems dimension. Based on the ranking of these six possibilities, we can develop an action plan to make it easier to get where they want to go. It is also important to consider Dr. Kissinger’s advice and learn the lesson from the cat in Alice In Wonderland.
